Ms. Ágnes Gerenday (1996–2023)

The first conductor of the Budapest Lantos (earlier Youth) Choir was born in Budapest. Ms. Gerenday was born in Budapest, graduated from the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in 1976 as secondary school music teacher and choir conductor. Her professors had been, among others Ms. Margit Gaál, Mr. Zoltán Vásárhelyi, Mr. József Maklári, Ms. Márta Ónody, Mr. Olivér Nagy and Mr. Sándor Szokolay. For the next year Ms. Gerenday worked at the Faculty of Folk Music Research of the Scientific Committee on Musicology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences under the guidance of Mr. Bálint Sárosi and Mr. László Vikár. The next five years were spent teaching music theory, music history, choir conducting and pedagogy at the Teachers’ Training College of Zsámbék. She spent 10 years teaching in evening classes and corresponding students at the Budapest Elementary School Teachers’ Training College.

Ms. Gerenday had been a collaborator in producing numerous music and literary programs for radios like Kossuth, Bartók, Calypso and the Catholic Radio of Eger.

She worked as a subject specialist in charge of professional music at the Head Department of Art of the prevailing Ministry of Culture between the years 1983 and 2016. She had been granted the title of professional counsellor only to receive later the Zoltán Magyary prize.

Ms. Gerenday had worked with numerous choirs as piano accompanist and second conductor, e.g. “Ganz Kapcsolók és Készülékek Gyára Új Világ Férfikara, Volánbusz Liszt Ferenc Férfikar, Solymári Férfikar, Láng-Acélhang Férfikar”. She had taken over the latter as conductor from her father Mr. Endre Gerenday in 2009.

Ms. Gerenday received the Silver Cross of the Republic of Hungary Order (of Merit) for the professional work she had followed with the Budapest Youth Choir.

Ms. Gerenday had been all time jury secretary of the Budapest International Choir Competition brought about by Mr. Strausz and Mr. Hollerung together with their choirs in 1998 to be followed by a whole series of international choir competitions and choir olympics.

Until her sudden death in 2023 she was the president of the Artistic Commission of KÓTA (Association of Hungarian Choirs, Orchestras and Folk Ensembles), and she had been a constant member of juries of international choir competitions.
